Wentworth
Wentworth is derived from the personal name Winta, which is Celtic or Old English, and wor - an enclosed homestead (i.e. one with a stockade around it). The village of Wentworth and the surrounding countryside, much of which is still owned by Fitzwilliam Estates and the Fitzwilliam family, has consequently has been left largely unspoiled. There is a lovely church, an old ruined one, two pubs, craft workshops and a very popular garden centre, lots of old cottages, good walking and some of the highest house prices around here.
If you like walking the village of Wentworth is a great place to walk. If you don't mind getting your feet muddy there are enjoyable walks through fields and woods ending up back in the centre of the village. If you prefer to keep your feet a bit drier then there is a pleasant stroll from the Garden Centre along the lane to the church, down past the old church and back along the main road via the George and Dragon or the Rockingham Arms.
Wentworth Woodhouse, a fine 18th Century Palladian mansion is set slightly to one side of the village and is privately owned. The stable block is also a magnificent building but empty and decaying last time I looked. Fortunately most of the other estate buildings: engine house, gun park, kennels have been converted into retail units.
Wentworth Garden Centre together with the craft shops and family farm are all situated in part of the old gardens of Wentworth Woodhouse. This part is freely open to the public but as there is a lot of ongoing maintenance and a good deal of restoration needing doing you are asked to put a donation in the box. It is a lovely old garden with some very pretty features and there are occasional concerts and plays held here. Lots of places for picnic on a nice day. Plenty of parking at the Garden Centre.
There is a village car park (charge) but the machines were broken the last twice we have been.
