The Rockingham Mausoleum

The Rockingham Mausoleum, standing in woodland by the B6091 between Nether Haugh and Wentworth, is architecturally the finest of the monuments built in 1788 in memory of the 2nd Marquis of Rockingham. It was designed by John Carr.

The Rockingham Mausoleum

I don't know about you but I find the idea of building a dirty great monument and then burying your dead in it rather repugnant. Mind you the idea goes back a long, long way. You have only to look at the roads leading out of Rome or Pompeii to see that they were pretty keen on dirty great monuments to the dead.

Open every Sunday from Spring Bank Holiday to August Bank Holiday 2 – 5pm. Small admission charge.
