Swinton Area
Bow Broom - Kilnhurst - Piccadilly - Swinton - Swinton Bridge
These areas are north east of Rotherham town centre. Swinton is a large village which sprawls around either side of the A2022 on the way to Mexborough: in fact you will often see it called Swinton, Mexborough. The famous Rockingham Potteries were situated to the extreme west of the present village. There is some pleasant older property scattered about but must of the village consists of 20th Century developments. Swinton Bridge is appropriately the area near the bridge over the canal and seems to refer mostly to an area of industrial estates. Kilnhurst is south east of Swinton nearer to the River Don and the canal and is definitely in the post town of Rotherham.
Bow Broom
I had never heard of Bow Broom before I began the research for these pages and still know nothing about it. Ray has been in touch and has let me know that "Bow Broom was a small village on a hill between Mexborough, Swinton and Wath. It is now an area of Swinton adjoining the Dearne Valley College and Manvers development. It is now marked locally only by the name of the local Working Men's Club the "Bowbroom Club" and in local parlance the bridge between Mexborough and Swinton at the Northern end is called the Bowbroom Bridge".
Piccadilly
Piccadilly is the southern part of Swinton and appears to consists of housing estates.
