The massive Aldwarke Steel works together with the associated electricity sub station dominate this area of the Don Valley.
For many years on hot summer's days the lock has been a magnet for youths to go swimming here. Sadly in 2005 one of them drowned.
This bridge is now disused and modern traffic takes the new road and bridge over t'Wesh.
There is a canal/river side walk from Aldwarke to the Back of Retail World. It passes along the levee between the river and the canal and the sewage works. It is quite a pleasant stroll if you can stand the smell: me, I take a peg whenever I go that way.
