Greasbrough Area
Greasbrough - Munsbrough - Rockingham - Wingfield
Greasbrough is north-west of Rotherham on the road to Barnsley and few remains of an old village centre with a 19th Century church. Wingfield, Rockingham and Munsbrough are new areas of housing around Greasbrough. In 2009 Rotherham Council are looking to release green belt land at Bassingthorpe Farm for housing. It looks as if the site which is large enough for a projected 3600 homes takes up a substantial wedge of land between Greasbrough, Kimberworth Park, Masbrough, Northfield and Rawmarsh. The open fields I'm looking over now will soon be housing if this goes ahead and I'm feeling very nimby about it.
Munsbrough
Munsbrough is an area of housing on the way into Greasbrough from Rotherham. Prior to the modern estate there was an old hall demolished in the 1970s and the area was farmed and mined. The original recorded name was Mundesclerhalle in 1379 when the Mundesclerhalle family lived there.
Rockingham
Rockingham is a collection of housing estates from the 1960s or early 1970s.
Wingfield
Wingfield is a collection of housing estates, from the 1960s if I remember correctly. The name first appears on a map of 1597 as Wilfelde meaning either a wild or windswept field. Until the housing estates came it likely remained that way.
