Pontefract Liquorice Festival

Pontefract, as everybody, knows, is the liquorice capital of Britain. The Festival celebrating the glutinous black substance is the second weekend in July each year and has a vast array of events at Pontefract Castle and in the town itself. Visit the website at www.pontefractliquoricefestival.co.uk.

Wakefield Festival of Rhubarb

Now who'd a thought it - a whole festival dedicated to Rhubarb! Well they've though of it in Wakefield - the rhubarb growing capital of Britain. A whole week dedicated to that magical plant that used to be the bane of many children's lives - rhubarb and custard, rhubarb pie, rhubarb crumble, stick of rhubarb dipped in sugar - cheap to grow and very nutritious, not to say efficacious. Lots of tours, talks and demonstrations based of course around rhubarb every February. Usually held the second week in February.
