Some Suggestions What To See & Do
Rotherham is not a grand city, its not even a quaint old town, but it does have some
things to see and do if you look for them. I have tried my utmost to keep these suggestions clean ones. I've added a few ideas for trips a bit further afield.
Permanent exhibitions of art are only on display in Rotherham Museum. The gallery in the Arts Centre shows monthly exhibitions and also sells the work. The Ron Day Gallery on Effingham Street, the Gallery at Dinnington and the Craft Zone on Wellgate all exhibit art for sale. There are however excellent galleries in Sheffield - Graves Art Gallery, The Millennium Galleries & Mappin Art Gallery.
Events Diary
Some of the events happening in Rotherham.
Places to Visit in Rotherham Centre
If you like old churches Rotherham is an absolute must.
Rotherham Minster previously the Parish Church of All Saints has been described as one of the finest of its type in England.
The Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge is one of the few remaining examples of a chantry chapel remaining in England. Besides this there are many wonderful old churches in many of
the villages that make up the borough.
Out & About in the Borough of Rotherham
The ruins of Roche Abbey at Maltby are a worth a visit.
The Village of Wentworth is particularly nice.
Museums
There are three museums in Rotherham, the Rotherham Museum, the York and Lancaster Regimental Museum and Magna Science and Adventure Centre which is a museum of a sort.
A short drive away are Abbeydale Hamlet, Kelham Island and the Shepherd's Wheel in Sheffield (lots else to see and do in Sheffield but traffic and parking are dire - go from Meadowhall
on the Supertram if possible). Further afield is the National of Photography in Bradford which I recommend, the Royal Armouries in Leeds - also recommended. Then there is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park for devotees of sculpture and Henry Moore.
Round and About Rotherham
A look at some other places to visit within a short drive from Rotherham.
Shopping
Rotherham is not a town for devoted shoppers. However having said that there are quite a few specialist shops if you look for them in and around town. Parkgate Retail World is to all intents and purposes the High Street for Rotherham and it is here you will find Marks and Spencer, BHS. Next and the like. For the shop 'til you drop brigade there are the Meadowhall Centre between Rotherham and Sheffield, the Yorkshire Outlet (now called Lakeside Village) at Doncaster, the White Rose Centre near Huddersfield. My personal recommendation is Leeds City Centre where there are many arcades and the sorts of small interesting (and expensive) shops that have all but disappeared from South Yorkshire.
Theatres
Rotherham is not big on theatres and the Civic Theatre still shuts down for the summer.
The Streets of Rotherham
Take a stroll around the Streets of Rotherham.
Walking
If you like walking there are many good walks about the town and further afield. See the pages about Walking in Rotherham for more information about rambles, trails and the Rotherham Walking Festival.
