The Rotherham Coat of Arms
I find it a bit weird that towns and cities have coats of arms, but they all seem to have got them so it is obviously not weird to other people. This one seems to be the present Coat of Arms.
Funny the coat of arms used to say 'Sic Virescit Industria' in my day. Ok so my day was the 1st century AD and this is the 21st and nobody speaks Latin any more, but somehow "By Industry and Honour" just doesn't have the same ring.
Rod believes that 'Sic Virescit Industria' was the motto on the "County
Borough of Rotherham Coat of Arms (the one I remember used to be on the side of the buses and
there was a big one on the side of the old (1971) Bus Station. I assume this (new) Coat Of Arms
was designed for the Metropolitan Borough and incorporates bits from the four constituent Urban
Districts and two Rural District Councils."
I found this Coat of Arms on the inn sign of the County Borough. This is presumably the old Rotherham Borough Coat of Arms as described by Rod. It is quite different from the one presently in use. Graham has also been in touch re the Coats of Arms:-
"With regard to the coat of arms found on the County Borough public house, this was the old Rotherham Borough Council coat of arms. The new coat of arms, depicted at the top of the page came into force on the formation of the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in 1974. I know that there was a previous coat of arms which had two shields. When this was finished with I do not know, but it was depicted on the trams of Rotherham and the buses bought up to 1948."
