Upper Millgate

Upper Millgate is a short stretch of road that runs from All Saints Square to Corporation Street. I have not been able to find Millgate or Lower Millgate so why upper I have no idea. There used to be a linen mill somewhere off to the left of this photograph so perhaps this was Millgate. If so it has disappeared leaving only the remains of the name and is now a small shopping precinct notable for being the pedestrian way into Tesco on Forge Island. In February 2007 Brian has been in touch to let me know that: -

"After reading your descriptions of Rotherham Streets I noticed you had no information of where Lower Millgate was. From my records it was situated down to the river Don from present Corporation Street. Roughly where the Tesco site is. This area contained the Rotherham's original corn mill (mentioned in the Doomesday book.)"

It looks as if the present Riverside Precinct covers much the same ground.

The White Hart Building

This is the only building of note on Upper Millgate. The White Hart Building covers a reasonable area here on Upper Millgate and then down Bridgegate. This building dates from 1929 and takes its name from the previous White Hart Inn which was one of the buildings demolished to form All Saints Square.

Rotherham Visitor Centre now occupies the corner shop on the right with the Tourist Development offices upstairs, next door is Barclays' Bank. However the White Hart Chambers and the public house the White Hart are unoccupied. The last occupier of the street level was the Halifax Building Society. In October 2003 there is much ado about building here so I am expecting to see a new occupier shortly. In November Malcolm Foy and Co Solicitors has opened here.
