Howard Street

In Howard Street are buildings dating from 1851, which were formed into Rotherham's Town Hall in 1871. These were extensively altered in 1895 and remained the Town Hall until the 1980s when it first moved to Elliott House and then to the former courthouse in the Crofts.

The Old Town Hall shopping area was developed from these buildings in the 1980s with shops on the ground floor and a mall running through the centre. I have no idea what goes on upstairs. In the summer of 2003 I have noticed that there have been workmen doing up part of the upstairs section and there is a 'To Rent - Suitable for Offices or Cafe' sign. In 2007 it looks as if it is still empty.

The other side of Howard Street consists of a row of unremarkable, modern buildings which were erected as part of a development called the Cascades Centre which filled three sides of a square, continuing along Frederick Street and Bridgegate.

Howard Street also runs up past the Market Hall, between the Howard and Clifton Buildings of Rotherham College of Art and Technology to join Doncaster Gate.
