Rotherham Health Matters
In 2011 The Yorkshire And Humber Public Health Observatory has published a summary of health statistics which has Rotherham performing badly in 25 out of 32 categories. For example:-
- Deaths per year from smoking are over 500, from cancer 381 and strokes/heart disease over 280.
- Teenage pregnancies run at 260 pa, which is nowhere near as high as I thought it would be, though significantly higher than in many other areas.
- Over 20% of primary school children are obese.
- 12745 children, which is a lot in an overall population of about 250,000, are classed as living in poverty.
A new Health and Well-being board is being set up from September 2011 involving NHS Rotherham, the General Hospital, and Rotherham Doncaster & South Humber Mental Health Foundation Trust. Just what this will do that is not already being done by the many and varied organisations mentioned below remains to be seen.
