Rotherham The
Unofficial Website
Parishes & Churches
The churches mentioned here are Church of England (Anglican). Rotherham
is part of the Diocese of Sheffield. The
diocese is split into several deaneries;
I think that there are three deaneries within the Borough of Rotherham, but some odd parishes
may belong to other deaneries; I can't be sure from my research. The deaneries consist of a
number of parishes, districts that have their own church and minister. At least this applied
until recent times but these days a minister may have the cure of several parishes,
particularly where the congregation is small.
The area covered by the administrative borough of Rotherham originally consisted of several
parishes, the Parish of Rotherham being in charge of a large area around the centre of town. As
the population increased during in the Nineteenth Century it became obvious that All Saints
Church in Rotherham could no longer minister to the outlying districts. New churches were
built, first as chapels of ease, but later becoming parish churches. Some of these later closed
and were demolished as the population migrated to new areas. I am unsure of how many other
parishes there were as parishes can be funny things and I know that part of Rawmarsh was
actually within the Parish of Ecclesfield. I think that this is too arcane a subject to pursue
here so contact the Diocese of Sheffield if you need further information.
