Politics
It was said of Rotherham, that if you stuck a Labour rosette on a monkey it would get elected. I think that this simple sentence just about sums up the political thinking of many people in the town and the borough over the last hundred years or so. For a long time this area has been one of the traditional Labour heartlands, though what with the modern Labour party, things are changing a bit. Well actually apathy is taking over.
As Churchill said:"No-one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
This preponderance of Labour support has meant that the other political parties and movements have not got much of a look in around here. It has also meant that local politicians have pursued and are pursuing, their own agendas, irrespective of what the electorate actually want.
The Borough of Rotherham is divided into three political constituencies - Rotherham, Rother Valley and Wentworth. You can visit the three elected Members of Parliament here and also the MEP (Member of the European Parliament). The constituencies are sub-divided into wards represented by local councillors on Rotherham Council. To be a bit even-handed I've also added a page of links to political parties and organisations.
