About the Project

Songs of Steel Community Oral History Project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and was initiated by Rotherham Community Arts and Archives and Local Studies in 2009. The project's aim was to collect the memories and stories of people in Rotherham who worked within the steel industry and to celebrate Rotherham's industrial heritage and create a legacy for future generations. Written testimonies, poems and songs about the Rotherham Steel Industry have been recorded for posterity. An exhibition of photographs, information and artefacts was held in various libraries across the borough during 2010.

The Opening

The Songs of Steel exhibition and a performance of some of the songs and poems took place at Magna on Tuesday 15 June 2010. There was a small a moderate audience who heard from local MP Denis MacShane, local singer Ray Hearne and other poets and singers who have contributed to the project, and former steelworker John Heaps who is now a guide at Magna.
