Rotherham Charities
It has often been said that the
poorer the people, the more that they give to charity. I don't know if this is true of
Rotherham, money wise anyhow. There are many, many charities operating in the Borough of
Rotherham. Hardly a week passes without one or two charity collection bags through my
mother's door. I've had a good look at some of these and 'charity' is hardly
the word to describe most of them.
There are loads of charity shops in the centre of Rotherham and even more in other places. Most of these are run by the big country-wide charities and I am not going to look at them here. These are some of the charities pertinent to the town and borough of Rotherham.
Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice
Cramfit Road, North Anston, Sheffield. Tel. 0845 108 1579.
The hospice which is entirely funded by charitable contributions opened in Septemeber 2008. The
hospice also runs a 'Hospice at Home' service to provide help for children and

children with cerebral palsy and associated disabilities

Rotherham Furniture Plus

Rotherham Furniture Plus is a registered charity no. 1072668. Its purpose is to provide
low cost furniture to people on low incomes or benefits. You can help by volunteering
your time or unwanted furniture or bric-a-brac in good condition. For more information

Rotherham Holiday Aid
Rotherham Holiday Aid is a charity that raises funds to send local families on holiday.
Grants are made to families suffering from deprivation or trauma caused by bereavement,
illness and handicap, or those who have been subject to abuse or are undergoing hardships
due to unemployment. Fund raising efforts are always ongoing and if you would like to
help with sponsorship, activities or just gave a donation you can contact Rotherham

Safe@Last is a charity dedicated to helping young people who have run away from home or
are in danger or at risk of being thrown out.
The Feoffees of Rotherham
The Feoffees still operate today and dispense a bit of Christmas joy to the pensioners of
the town. I do not have a contact address at present.
The Hamby Foundation
The Hamby Foundation exists to help the poorest children, families and old people of
Romania. There is a charity shop on the first floor of Hamby's Rotherham shop which
sells good quality bric-a-brac, books, videos and ornaments. They also they sell Romanian
lace mats made by young women from poor families or disabled people. The full price of
these goods goes to the producers. Every penny given goes to help somebody - there are no
running cost taken from your donations.
