In Bloom Competitions
In spite of the fact
that Rotherham is a working industrial town there is a great deal of interest in flowers.
Rotherham Chamber of Trade in conjunction with Rotherham Borough Council run a Rotherham in
Bloom Competition each year. Several of the churches hold yearly Flower Festivals, whilst the
village of Thorpe Salvin is a regular winner of the Yorkshire/Britain in Bloom competitions and
was gold medal winner of the Entente Florale in 2002.
Allotments in Rotherham
As of 2007 there are 27 allotment areas in the Borough of Rotherham, mostly close to the centre of town and northward to Wath upon Dearne. If you fancy growing your own Tel. 01709 822453.
Church Flower Festivals
Several of Rotherham's churches hold Flower Festivals during the year. Maltby Flower Festival, St Bartholomew's, Maltby is held each year in August. I believe that St Thomas', Kimberworth also holds a Flower Festival, as does St Peter's at Thrybergh and I'm sure I've seen others. Where I have obtained details they are listed in the monthly events.
Garden Trails
Garden trails have been held for many years every July in the village of Thorpe Salvin to enable the public to visit and appreciate the gardens in the village that has often won prizes in Yorkshire in Bloom and Britain in Bloom. visit the Thorpe Salvin website www.thorpesalvin.org.uk for more details. The village of Swinton also has a garden trail each year with the proceeds going to charity.
