Up to the middle of the 19th Century the Oakwood area was still predominately rural. A farm had long existed hereabouts. One of the ancient pathways which seems likely to existed from Pre-Roman times passed not far from here and is still clearly shown on Ordnance Survey maps of that time.

Oakwood Grange

I believe that Oakwood Grange was built about the same time, or soon after Oakwood Hall, for James Yates's daughter. It must have been demolished to make way for Oakwood School.

Oakwood Hall

Oakwood Hall was built in the 1850s for James Yates. Some would have it that this is the grandest house erected by any of the Victorian industrial barons in Rotherham. I am of a contrary opinion. The Hall continued as a private home until 1916 when it was converted to a VAD hospital. It was badly damaged by fire in 1918.

The VAD hospital closed in 1919 and the Hall became a TB sanatorium. It ceased as a sanatorium and was, I believe used as an old folks' hospital. The new Rotherham District General Hospital was developed in the grounds surrounding Oakwood Hall about 1980 (can't actually recall when). The Hall can still be found amongst the jumble of buildings that form the hospital, more especially amongst the jumble of cars.
