Anston Hall

I have been able to find little about the history of the Hall, other than that it became home to the Wright family in the late 17th Century. The Hall was sold by Miss Constance Wright in 1947 and was converted into apartments. Numbers 3 to 6 of the Old Hall building date back to the early 18th Century whilst 1 and 2 are 19th century. Another version is that Anston Hall was sold by the Wright Family to a Mr. Ball, whose daughter lived in the Hall until recent times. Anston Hall is on Quarry Lane.

Robin has been in touch with the following information:-

"You say you've not been able to find out much about Anston Hall. Here's a bit more info.
Over the years, the Wrights have had a lot of contact and influence in Anston. At one point a Wright the South Anston pub, the [Duke of] Leeds Arms was sold and rebought by a member of the Wright family in one day. Another member of the Wright family endowed 27 places for Anston children at the local school; a Wright negotiated to supply the stone for the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament.
The Hall was first known as Rock House because it stood right on the edge of the limestone scarp. There was a house and farm here possibly before 1720 when the south wing of the house was built.hat is not clear is whether the Wrights lived at Hall [probably called Home] Farm before living in the Hall.
The Victorian wing - No's 1 & 2 were probably built in the 1840's when the Wrights won the contract to supply Anston limestone to rebuild the Houses of Parliament. This would have made them very wealthy and they obviously decided to expand and build the West Wing.
When the Hall was sold in 1947, the Hall was described as having one of the finest rock gardens in the country. It was sold by Constance Wright to [I think] Sheffield United Steels, who then sold it again in 1951. Whether John Bull bought who worked for SUS [I believe] bought it from SUS I don't know, but JB certainly owned the Hall in the mid 70's, though he by then lived in a bungalow in the grounds called the Court. His daughter lived in No 3 The Hall."
