Aldwarke Hall
Aldwarke Hall was one of the three manors of Rawmarsh. There were three manor houses as the manor of Rawmarsh was inherited by three daughters who each had a third share and had a residence built in each. A house had existed here since Mediaeval times but this was demolished and the modern hall was built for Francis Foljambe in 1720.
I have an Ordnance Survey map from 1893 which shows the hall, what I presume to be the stable block and Aldwarke Farm set in a landscape of fields and woods. The inescapable fact was that by that time industry in the form of Aldwarke Main Colliery, railways, kilns, brickworks was only a mile or so from a rural idyll that was soon to disappear.
Aldwarke Hall was demolished in 1898 and the Aldwarke Steelworks now cover the site.
