David Seaman
Footballer
David Seaman was born in Rotherham on 19 Sep 1963. I understand that he was brought up in traditional two-up two-down terraced house that used to be the norm around here. He attended Kimberworth Comprehensive School. He was a gifted sportsman, being offered an apprenticeship at Yorkshire County Cricket Club for cricket and at Leeds United for football. He chose the latter option.
He played for the following clubs:
- Leeds United (pre 1982)
- Peterborough United (1982)
- Birmingham City (Sep 1984)
- Queen's Park Rangers (Aug 1986).
- Arsenal from 15 May 1990. Transfer fee for £1.3m which was a British record for a goalkeeper. First Appearance: On tour Vs Varbergs Bols (Sweden) 22 Jul 1990. League Vs Wimbledon (a) 25 Aug 1990.
- Last Club:
Manchester City Signed on 04-06-2003 for Manchester City - Fee Free
Extra Information:
'Safe Hands' broke Jack Kelsey's club record of 353 appearances for a goalkeeper. He played in all three of England's World Cup finals matches. Any use of the playing record statistics must be credited to: AFCi www.arsenal.co.uk.
David was capped many times as goalkeeper for England. I failed to find the right site to give me these figures.
2004 - following injuries David has announced his retirement at the age of forty. He intends to devote more time to his hobby of fishing. Well there's nets and there's nets, and it looks as if David can't get away from one sort or another.
Following his retirement from professional football David has pursued a show biz career with various television appearances including 'Strictly Ice Dancing'. In late 2005 he had his trademark ponytail cut off on live television for charity. He returned to the ice for another ice-dancing series 'Dancing on Ice' in 2006. He has also appeared on 'All Star Family Fortunes'. I believe, though I may be wrong here, that he has also appeared in the travelling 'Dancing on Ice' show.
David Seaman also hosts a 'Safe Hands' charity golf event annually, and has released two football-themed DVDs entitled David Seaman's Goalkeeping Nightmares in 2003 and Jeepers Keepers in 2004.
As far as I know David is married (sensible man married his agent). David Seaman with his wife, Debra (Debbie) owns David Seaman Promotions Ltd. There is an ex-wife and a couple of sons somewhere in the background.
