Paul Shane
Comedian

Paul Shane George Frederick Speight was born on 19 June 1940 in Rotherham. George worked as a miner by day and an amateur singer and stand-up comedian at nights in the northern clubs until he turned professional in 1974. His first appearance, as a straight singer, was at the Grafton Pub on St Ann's Road, Rotherham, now demolished for "Two pints of ale and 20 Park Drive a night". Paul's first club booking was at St Ann's Club in Rotherham, for 30 bob (£1.50), not much, but in wasn't bad for a beginner in those days.

Paul's transformation from singer to comedian was a gradual one, starting with his rendition of Green Green Grass of Home, straight at first, but ultimately a hilarious send up of Tom Jones.

Paul Shane is best remembered as the camp (I mean holiday camp and not Graham Norton camp) comedian Ted Bovis in Hi-de-Hi!

His many other television credits include:-
A Day Out, Keep an Eye on Albert, Summer Season, Vampires, Buses, Sounding Brass, The Old Crowd, Turtles Progress, Muck and Brass, Life for Christine, The Generation Game, Supergran, Very Big Very Soon, Woof!, The Right Result, Chucklevision, Mothers Ruin, Oh! Doctor Beeching, and You Rang M'Lord

More recently:-
Holby City (1999 - 2002) - Stan Ashleigh (season 3 - 4)
Doctors - Bill Joseph - To Have amp; To Hold (2000), Twist Of Fate (2000), Loose Ends (2000), A Life In The Day (2000)

I'm sure that Paul Shane has appeared in many pantomimes but I can't find anywhere he will own up to them.

In 2004 Paul has been appointed as ambassador for the town of Rotherham. Knowing Rotherham this is not a paying position but it might get him a few free drinks.

Some of you have asked me if I can contact Paul on your behalf. I used to have the name and telephone number of his agent in Leeds but this number became unobtainable in 2005. Since then I have not been able to obtain any further contact number for Paul so I am unable to help in this matter. Nor have I been able to find any website, nor even a fan club address.
