Peter Elliott

I had all but forgotten that Peter Elliott was from Rotherham but by chance I noticed a plaque in Rotherham Hospital which I had passed many times before and ignored. This time I stopped to read it and it was a dedication to Peter Elliott who opened new facilities for the hospital. ESP must have been at work for the following morning there was an email from Paul in my inbox mentioning the said Peter.

Peter Elliott was born in Rotherham on Tuesday, 9th October 1962.

Paul has provided the following information:–

"I remember when he ran in the Olympics in USA and we all had to get up in the middle of the night to watch him race. Then we had a street party when he returned. All I know about Peter Elliott is that he comes from Sandhill in Rawmarsh, went to Rawmarsh comp (I think he left in 79-80), was a chippie at British Steel, ran for Rotherham Harriers and suddenly became the best middle distance runner in the world for a short time. He's also a really nice guy who made us laugh in his post race BBC interviews by saying that he felt 'comfy' during the race. David Cole et al usually referred to him as the Gritty Yorkshireman."

Peter Elliot's events were the 800m, 1500m, and 1 mile. He won the following medals in International competition:–

Peter Elliott's International Medals

800m Silver at 1987 World Championships
1500m Silver in 1988 Seoul Olympics
800m Bronze 1986 Commonwealth Championships
1500m 1990 Gold Commonwealth Championships

I understand that Peter is now coaching and organised races as running director of Nova International. In 2004 he became the Athlete Services Manager for Yorkshire at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
