William Cowen
Artist
b. 18 June 1791, Rotherham
d. 29 January 1864, Brompton
William Cowen was born in Rotherham in 1791 of humble parentage. Little is known of his early years but by 1811 he was a drawing master in Sheffield. Later he settled in London and became a founder of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. He must have returned home from time to time as there is a large watercolour of the interior of Rotherham Parish church dated 1846. His later years were spent at Brompton and he is buried in Brompton Cemetery.
