Northern College
Northern College is the only residential Adult Education College serving the whole of the North of England. It is situated at Wentworth Castle at Stainborough near Barnsley and is easily accessible from the M1 motorway or by bus from the Barnsley Interchange. If you are looking at Further Education in the Rotherham Area then you might like to consider Northern College rather than the usual suspects mentioned in the Further Education section. There are no direct bus services from Rotherham and since the College is a bit out of the way transport is needed.
Its work is mainly in providing 2nd chance residential educational opportunities. All of the courses are free and that includes accommodation and child care where required. The College offers:–
- A 1 year full-time Diploma which is equivalent of the first year of a degree and can be used to pursue further courses of Higher Education at University;
- A Pathways Programme of 3 day residential courses on a range of popular subjects from IT to Local History;
- The College also offers 'specialist' part-time courses such as the National Certificate in Tenants Participation' and the B.A. Degree in 'Community Development and Regeneration'.
- Lastly, they offer 3 day residential courses specifically designed to meet the needs of groups and individuals from each of the South Yorkshire Local Authorities.
The College has played a big part in community regeneration and renewal with courses specifically designed to help those communities suffering from the devastation of large scale decline in traditional industries.
The College is also a venue for Day and Residential Conferences and Weddings with a dedicated team of residential and catering staff.
