Walking in Rotherham
Strangely enough Rotherham is quite a nice town if you like walking, whether you use it as a starting base, or as a centre for wider exploration. A few minutes walk from almost anywhere will bring you to the edge of open country. Now I'm not saying that it is all as pretty as a picture post card. Far from it.
There are has over 250 miles of public rights of way in the borough of Rotherham and there are various routes for horseriders and cyclists as well as walkers. You can strike out as long or short a distance as you like through fields, woods and pretty villages, but that same walk will just as often take you by derelict old pits or abandoned works. Using car, bus or train you can soon reach very nice walking areas. There are waymarked walks all over the area from 3 or 4 miles to major hikes. There are doorstep walks, pleasant strolls and health walks. If you want to walk alone or in company you certainly are not spoiled for choice.
