The Definitive Map

walking imageThe Definitive Map and Statement of Rotherham are a legal record of Public Rights of Way that were known to exist when the map was completed in 1952. The inclusion of a Right of Way on the Definitive Map and Statement is conclusive evidence that it exists and that members of the public have a right to pass.

Parts of central Rotherham never had a definitive map and the Council is always looking for evidence of the status of pathways etc. so that new maps can be produced. In outlying areas of the borough the Definitive Map is constantly reviewed. The definitive map for the old county borough of Rotherham were compiled in the 1990s and the majority of problems over public rights of way were resolved.

The Definitive Map is at a scale of 1:10,000 (about 6" to one mile). Information from the Definitive Map is supplied to the Ordnance Survey.

The Definitive Map can be viewed at the Department of Engineering in Bailey House.
