Adopt-A-Path

walking imageRotherham Council runs an "Adopt-A-Path" scheme to encourage members of the public to walk the public footpaths, bridleways and byways of the town and ensure that they are free from obstruction and that stiles and signposts are properly maintained. Any unadopted path or network of pathways can be chosen and you are encouraged to walk them 2 - 3 times a year. Any problems that are encountered are to be reported to the Rights of Way Unit.

The sort of problems you might encounter are:-

  • Missing or damaged signs. (A favourite trick of the youth around here is turn the sign around so you end up in Sheffield when you were heading for Rotherham).
  • Stiles with broken or rotting timbers, missing sections, or generally in a dangerous condition.
  • Obstructions to the path e.g. ploughed up, planted over, fenced over, barbed-wire, or simply overgrown. Or a favourite where I used to live some years ago dumping very large quantities of very smelly dung right across a narrow piece of path. Fragrant, very fragrant!
  • Keeping dangerous livestock in a field crossed by a public footpath.
