Rotherham Show ceased to hold its heavy horses and show jumping sections several years ago. I am told that it was because they were ill supported but I expect that they did not make enough money and took too much cleaning up.

Wentworth Show was held for many years and contained show jumping classes amongst the many usual sections at a country agricultural show. It was organised by the Dearne Valley Agricultural Society. However the show was cancelled in 2001 due to the Foot and Mouth outbreak and again in 2002 due to waterlogging of the field. I understand that the cancellation insurance did not cover this contingency and that the costs had to be met by the organisers. For 2003 and later years I have seen no show advertised so I am presuming that no show has been organised.

Horse Shows

Rotherham Horse Festival is held each year in August. This event seems to be neither advertised nor covered in the local press. Contact Email in 2006 was david.asbery1atvirgin.net (remember to change at to @) for details.

The Wentworth Pony Club website disappeared some time ago. In December 2007 I accessed the general Pony Club site but it has not reappeared there or anywhere else that I can find. However gymkhanas are still held in the Rotherham area but I have no details.

Horse Riding for Pleasure

Although I have found the addresses of several riding schools in the area they do not appear to offer boarding if you bring your own horse on holiday, nor riding holidays with tuition and trekking by the day or by the week. I could be wrong - if anybody has more information please let me know.

There is a leaflet of 'Round Rotherham Rides' suitable for cyclists or horse riders. Copies are available from the Transportation Unit at Rotherham Borough Council Tel. 44 (0)1709 822951 or Rotherham Visitor Centre 44 (0)1709 835904 or Email tic@rotherham.gov.uk.
