Gun Sport
Rotherham is not what you would call a hotbed of the shooting
fraternity. Unlike some people I have no problem with gun sports as long as they are properly conducted. Shooting targets and clays is doubtless as much fun as any other sport. I've
nothing against the local shoot either as they, or their dogs, consume what they catch or deal with creatures classed as vermin. No - what I most object to is the misuse of the air
rifle which is very frequent around here (and doubtless a lot of other places as well). Some parents seem to think that it is quite in order to send out children as young as ten years
old armed with a potentially deadly weapon and just let them get on with it. I have now threatened to start taking photographs with my digital camera so watch these pages. The law
relating to the use of air rifles has changed and I am looking for an up to date website with comprehensive details so you know what ground you can legally stand on, for those who like
me shout very loudly at misusers. Please visit the website at The British Association for Shooting and
Conservation for full information.
Gun Clubs in Rotherham
I have been unable so far to find the addresses of any local gun clubs but there must be some as I often hear shooting at clays when I am out walking the dogs.
A new club serving the Dearne Valley will be opened at Wath as part of the Birdwell Armoury as soon as the Ministry of Defence renewal certificate has been granted. One of the club's main goals will be to encourage youngsters to join. The Empire Shooting Sports Club is at the Old Drill Hall, Moor Road, Wath. I will add further details if and when I get them.

Shoots
The only shoot that I know for certain exists around here is the syndicate that lease the shooting rights over the Wentworth Estate. I do not have a contact number.
