Under 18s Football
The Rotherham United Worship Page
At one time in Rotherham, football was almost a religion to some sections of the community. Now I have never been a fan of football even in my mis-spent youth. This did not apply to the rest of
my family (except Mother) who could all be found somewhere near a football on any winter Saturday. My eldest brother played for various amateur sides so he was rarely to be seen on the
terraces, but Father (who had been a Rotherham Boy and always contrived to get in for free), younger brother and sister-in-law (who sold programmes) were some of Rotherham United's most solid
supporters.
Youth clubs, boys' clubs, church clubs all used to encourage footballing as a good, healthy activity for the young. This spilled over into adulthood when many working men's clubs, public houses and employers used to support football sides. All over Rotherham boys used to kick footballs in parks, on playing fields, in the streets, on the gardens and through the neighbour's windows. Jumpers and jackets made up the goalposts and often went home muddy.
The Rotherham Sunday League is popular and well supported. There are literally dozens of Sunday League sides in the Rotherham area; please visit the link below for more information. There are loads of Under 18 football sides for all ages and both sexes as well as coaching sessions in school holidays. Rotherham's professional football club may be having its problems but it looks as if the Beautiful Game is doing very well for itself in the town and borough.
