Working Men's Clubs
Working men's clubs may not have originated in Rotherham but in their heyday they proliferated around here like fleas on a dog. In the last few years many of them have gone to the wall as the working men who supported them quite simply don't work any more.
I'm sure that a PHD could be written on the history of working men's clubs, in fact it probably has been, but I shall not bore you with any dry old data. Suffice it to say that when we were teenagers my mates and I bluffed our way into associate membership of one by saying that our fathers were members - Wingfield I think it was. We had some wonderful nights out what with the cheap beer and the excellent cabaret.
Some working men's clubs operate a strict members, associate members and their guests policy - some do not. Some say new members welcome. It's probably best to phone up to check before going.
