Working Men's Clubs
Working men's clubs may not have originated in Rotherham but in
their heyday they proliferated around here like fleas on a dog. In the last few years many of
them have gone to the wall as the working men who supported them quite simply don't work
any more.
I'm sure that a PHD could be written on the history of working men's clubs, in fact it
probably has been, but I shall not bore you with any dry old data. Suffice it to say that when
we were teenagers my mates and I bluffed our way into associate membership of one by saying
that our fathers were members - Wingfield I think it was. We had some wonderful nights out what
with the cheap beer and the excellent cabaret. No - we never went on bingo nights.
Some working men's clubs operate a strict members, associate members and their guests policy - some do not. Some say new members welcome. It's probably best to phone up and check before going.

"A tremendous bit of news from an innovative local working men's club. The very small and friendly Parkhill Social at Firbeck (known locally as Firbeck Club) has shown a good deal of initiative by commissioning it's own website. Yes, a working men's club with it's very own website - not exactly a first but very much among the forerunners. The developing site www.firbeck.clubbers.net gives the routine but essential detail about opening times and has a section covering club activities which is updated directly by Rob the club steward. Additionally there is a section covering the history of the club and some of the legends of Firbeck village. Hopefully the site will be successful in bringing the club more success and allow it to remain at the centre of the village community.
