We visited again on a very pleasant day in late November and sat outside with the dog, following the sun from table to table as it moved. We had the offer which was two meals (from a limited menu) and two pud for 9.99. Whilst it was very pleasant I don't think that the food was as good as on the previous visit though the service was a whole lot better.
The Gate Inn at Swinton is part of the Sizzling Pubs chain. We have passed by many, many times over the years and noted how busy it always is which is usually the sign of a decent place.
We did the round Swinton Roman Ridge Walk and decided to have lunch at there. We had the to meals for £8 menu (both fish and chips) and excellent it was for the money. Freshly prepared fish with good, crispy batter, usual chips and a sprinkling of peas. Other food looked just as good. For a Thursday lunchtime the pub was very busy and almost everybody was eating there. Reasonably priced drinks.
The Pedant who has recently eaten at the Wetherspoon's in Rotherham (Bluecoat and t'other'un (not Rhinos) ah got it The Corn Law Rhymer) reckoned it much superior for the same sort of price.
Only fly in the ointment was the long, long wait for the food: about 40 minutes or so. Not a place to go if you are in a hurry.
