Woodlands in Wentworth

parks imagePerhaps I did not look far enough but I was unable to find the woods in Wentworth listed as Heritage Woodlands so I've put them here.

King's Wood

King's Wood is an ancient semi-natural woodland which once covered a wide area in the ancient townships of Wentworth and Brampton Bierlow. There is along history of coppicing in King's Wood which has provided wood for making charcoal.

The main species of trees are sessile oak, holly, birch, rowan and silver birch. The woods are also rich in wildlife including the greater spotted bikie boy.

Low Wood

Low Wood is all that remains of a once much larger piece of woodland that adjoined King's Wood.

Woodland on the Wentworth Woodhouse Estate

There are lots of areas of woodland on the Wentworth Woodhouse Estate, including the Deer Park. Public footpaths pass through part of Trowles Wood and the Mausoleum Plantation but I think that the rest are private. There are three ponds in the estate grounds, Morley Pond. Dog Kennel Pond and Mill Dam. You can walk alongside Mill Dam but other footpaths are discretionary and were closed for a time - I don't know if they still are. There is fishing on Mill Dam but you need to buy permits from Wentworth Fisheries. Details can be found onsite at Recreation in Rotherham >> Sport >> Fishing - Wentworth Fisheries.
