Thorpe Salvin Woods

Situated at Thorpe Salvin in the extreme south-east of the borough are three patches of woodland owned by Rotherham Council. These are remnants of the once-great forests that covered Britain. The areas of woodland consist of:-

Hawks Wood
Old Meadow Wood
Thorpe Low Wood

These three small woods are situated on the Magnesian Limestone Belt. They all grow close to the Chesterfield Canal and can be accessed from the canal footpaths or north of the village of Thorpe Salvin itself. They are criss-crossed with paths so you can explore to your heart's content.

With monetary help from the Forestry Commission a programme of litter-picking, safety work, repairs and maintenance and tree-felling has taken place. The woods are an important for wildlife with limited archaeological remains.

There are other, private, woods near Thorpe Salvin eg. Loscar Wood, Cuthbright Wood, Old Spring Wood with limited or no access.
