Wath Parks

Newhill Park, Wath

I know nothing much about the park other than that it contains the Payne Mausoleum, a listed building. I understand that the park used to be the grounds of Newhill Hall. The hall has disappeared but let us be grateful for the park. There is very little here but an expanse of grass suitable for dog walking or kicking a football about, and a few trees.

Great Plans are afoot for the redevelopment of the park. These include:-

  • The Park Entrance will have refurbished steps with handrail and hazard warning pavement. Sign board erected displaying historical park information. The existing entrance will be resurfaced allowing access for vehicles to stand with locked vehicle access gate. New separate pedestrian access path with gate to prevent motorbike access. Low level planting around the walls and steps will enhance the formal entrance. Addition of a finger post with arms directing people through the park
  • The Mausoleum, a Grade 2 Listed building first listed on 13th November 1962 will be restored and a low fence added to the enclosure wall.
  • An open area will be provided for events and informal sport activities.
  • New resin bound footpaths will be laid.
  • An informal wildflower meadow will be created to promote biodiversity and form an attractive feature. Mown paths will meander throughout the area with designated seating areas for rest.
  • A Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) will provide a enclosed area for ball games and the use of dark green metalwork should contribute to the overall parkland. Wooden seating cubes should channel the youth problems away from the mausoleum to a designated area.
  • Nature/Orchard Walk improvement including works carried out to existing path and additional aggregate paths, timber set into the ground creating informal pathways and stepping logs will add play elements for the children, art work or feature randomly located for discovery and interest, works carried out as per advice of council arboroculturalist to enhance tree structure and canopy, wildflo, wer areas and under story bulb planting will provide seasonal interest and enhance the biodiversity of the area.
  • The west boundary will be improved to create a natural barrier between the existing houses and the play area. Traditional black metal railings will line the edge of the park with gates for access.
  • An Informal Play area will be creatwd with low level planting creates a barrier between the road, fence and playground. This will be structural planting for the children to play amongst such as bamboo, cornus etc. Mounds allow material to be kept on site when building climbing/play equipment and paved areas. This also allows for a natural play item and bank slides. There will be seating provided for parents etc. to watch children.

Sounds good doesn't it! Went up to look in July and can't see that anything has been done so far in 2011.
