RIGS
Regionally Important Geological Sites in Rotherham
I could not find another section of the website into which I could comfortably
fit this section so I decided to tag it onto Parks as some of the regionally important
geological sites already feature in this section under other descriptions.
These sites have been designated RIGS for their merit as educational, historic, scientific areas or for their aesthetic value. Whilst different to SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) they are places that may still require conservation as heritage sites and for present and future use.
In 2006 the Borough of Rotherham has its fair share of RIGS: twenty-three to be exact. These are:-
- Hoober Plantation, Hoober, Wentworth
- Hermit Hill Quarry, off Wentworth Road, Swinton
- Hooton Roberts Quarries, off Kilnhurst Road, Hooton Roberts
- Shepherd's Plantation, off Oaks Lane, Wingfield
- Thundercliffe Grange (Grange Hall), Kimberworth Visit onsite re the hall
- Grange Moor Quarry, Kimberworth
- Boston Park Visit onsite
- Canklow Woods Visit onsite
- Great Bank, somewhere behind the Stag - not sure of the actual whereabouts
- Silverwood Quarry, somewhere between Thrybergh and Ravenfield Common but it is not shown on my map
- Maltby Brickworks, (the old Maltby Metallic Brick Co.). The site is not shown on my map unless it is the 'Claypit' off Bawtry Road just to the west of Maltby
- School Cave, Maltby
- Herne Hill Caves, Maltby
- Wood Lea Common, Maltby also known as Maltby Crags (also an SSSI). Visit onsite
- Maltby Wood Cave, Maltby
- Roche Abbey and Norwood Caves. Visit Roche Abbey onsite
- Red Hill Plantation Quarry, Kiveton Park
- Kiveton Lodge 2, Kiveton Park
- Anston Stones Wood, parallel to the A57 Worksop Road to the east of South Anston. Visit onsite
- Lindrick Dale, Monk Bridge and Wood Mill, off the A57 Worksop Road
- Fan Field Quarry, off the A57 Worksop Road
- Shireoaks/Turnerwood Quarry, off the A57 Worksop Road
- Slaypit Lane Quarry, south of Kiveton Park
Many of these sites have no right of access to visit them. Places like the various cave systems in Maltby were sealed off with iron railings many years ago to stop the kids getting lost or hurt in them. Ones that I know that you can visit connect to other pages on Rotherham - The Unofficial Website but there may be others. If you are seriously interested in any of these sites please contact Scott Engering Email scottatsengering.fsnet.co.uk (remember to replace at with @).
The RIGS group would like to work with landowners to conserve their sites and develop them as showcases for educational and interpretive purposes. Please contact Scott above.
