These reserves are notified by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in consultation with English Nature in order to protect sites of local importance for nature conservation, education and amenity. The local authority must either own or have a legal interest in the land before a LNR can be declared. Woodhouse Washlands is no longer included on the Rotherham list of of local nature reserves but I have left it here as the site is partly in the Borough of Rotherham. Kilnhurst Ings is not included in the current list of Local Nature Reserves in Rotherham but it is there and it still has the sign up so here it is.
Although LNRs have no direct statutory protection, management rules or bye-laws can be used to control damaging activities. Sites may be declared LNRs for the protection of flora, fauna or geographical and physiographical features of special interest.
