Other Green Areas

Rotherham is a town full of green areas and I am certainly not going to look at all of them here. The details that appear on this page are here because I'm not sure they fit in any of the other categories.

Brookfields Park

Brookfields Park is not precisely a park but a landscaped area off Dearne Road, Wath-Upon-Dearne. In 2008 approximately 60,816 native whips, transplants and feathered trees were planted resulting in 24 hectares of mixed woodland. The remaining 16 hectares of land are given over to amenity grassland and wildflower areas for informal recreational use by the public. There seems at present to none of the facilities of an urban park so I have included it here.

Winthrop Park

Winthrop Park has been developed on the site of a derelict former sewage works at Wickersley. At a cost of around £100,000 the site has been transformed into a bio-diverse Nature Therapy Park. Now you see why I could not quite fit Winthrop Park into any of the other sections under Rotherham Parks.

The facilities have been specifically designed with the elderly and disabled adults in mind, and the gardens are split in to areas of specific interest to stimulate all the senses. There is no entry fee, but visitors are required to sign-in and observe the requirements of admittance. Group visits must be pre-booked in advance. Well behaved dogs on leads welcome. Children must be accompanied at all times and supervised. No-smoking policy on the premises and grounds.

The garden is very limited in size ie small though well-set out, it won't occupy you for long. It is well-fenced with both the human-proof and the rabbit-proof kind. Second Lane has now been resurfaced so access to Winthrop Park is easier. The park has now been extended with more on-site parking, a tea room, and a conservatory displaying and selling craftwork.
