Other Green Areas
Rotherham is a town full of green areas and I am certainly not going to look at all of them here. The details that appear on this page are here because I'm not sure they fit in any of the other categories.
Kiveton Water
The former site of Kiveton Park Colliery has been reclaimed by the Land
Restoration Trust. The site which covers about 59 hectares is to be managed by the Forestry
Commission Rangers for the benefit of the public. The ravages of the old pit workings have been
swept away and the site transformed into fishing ponds and woodlands. There are cycle tracks
and presumably public footpaths. I understand that the fisheries are to be managed by a private
company.
Winthrop Park
Winthrop Park has been developed on the site of a derelict former sewage works at Wickersley. At a cost of around £100,000 the site has been transformed into a bio-diverse Nature Therapy Park. Now you see why I could not quite fit Winthrop Park into any of the other sections under Rotherham Parks.

The 2008 season opened on 1st April and ended 31st October. Winthrop Park is open each week day 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, and on Sundays 10:30 am to 4:00 pm (subject to weather). CLOSED on Saturdays. Please telephone to check openings on Bank Holidays.
The facilities have been specifically designed with the elderly and disabled adults in mind, and the gardens are split in to areas of specific interest to stimulate all the senses. There is no entry fee, but visitors are required to sign-in and observe the requirements of admittance. Group visits must be pre-booked in advance. Well behaved dogs on leads welcome. Children must be accompanied at all times and supervised. No-smoking policy on the premises and grounds.
The garden is very limited in size ie small though well-set out, it won't occupy you for long. It is well-fenced with both the human-proof and the rabbit-proof kind. Second Lane is a dead end track, pitted and muddy in places. There is limited parking in the park with preference given to the disabled, otherwise its a muddy field or a walk from Newhall Avenue.
