Youth Clubs & Community Centres

Some of the kids around Rotherham are constantly moaning that there is nothing to do. So the boys amongst them ride their motorbikes illegally, use their air rifles illegally and set off fireworks to the annoyance of everybody. I'll admit that when it comes to drinking the girls are as bad as the boys.

In 2011 the Youth Services in Rotherham are due for a major shake-up, or perhaps that should be shake-down, as Our Beloved Council try and save money. Eleven Youth Centres are due to be axed or not re-opened, including some that have never been listed here. Where there are youth centres in the same area they will be subject to consolidation leaving a KEY centre in each Area Assembly area and additional centres in some. RMBC also proposes to provide mobile vans to bring youth services to various areas.

Jumping on the government's "Big Society" bandwagon, RMBC are hoping to palm off the running of some clubs to the voluntary sector. There will also be mobile units serving areas where there is no permanent provision.

Where there is no comment in red I have not found out what is happening to some youth centres. Maybe they have already gone or are not run by the council.

In my day, which you know was long and long ago, many of the churches used to run Youth Clubs. I have had a good look at the churches in my area and only one seems to have activities suitable for the young - I must admit that I was very interested in some of the trips on offer but I'm just a tad more than 14. Other activities for youth can be found at:–
