There are a number of regular events in the borough of Rotherham that bring visitors from far and wide.
The Rotherham year kicks off in March with the Rotherham Real Ale & Music Festival This four day festival provides the best in beers, wines and ciders along with a variety of top quality entertainment.
This is followed by another bonanza of entertainment towards the end of April and spilling into May with the Wath Festival. Concerts feature British and International artistes mainly of the folk genre. There is a a Children's Festival, a Community Festival, Workshops, Street Performers including Wath Morris, Dancing, Craft Stalls, Hog Roast and the legendary bun-throwing from the church tower.
Rotherham Walking Festival has now been held, most successfully, for over ten years. There are walks for everybody from strollers to hikers together with other events. These culminate with the sponsored Round Rotherham Walk on the last Sunday of the festival. It is not being held in 2011.
After the quiet month of August when the theatre in Rotherham is closed and there is traditionally not so much doing because everyone is away on their holidays, September becomes very busy with Rotherham Heritage Open Days and the immensely popular Rotherham Show.
Rotherham Open Arts Festival has teetered around a bit. When it started a few years ago the various events covered the month of September but it has moved to October and then back to September.
Many of the villages around Rotherham hold galas every year. From being little local affairs some of these have developed into big shows. Details where I have been able to find them are listed in the Monthly Events Dary.
Brinsworth Gala
Held every year on the first Sunday in July on Brinsworth Playing Fields. This is an important event in the Rotherham calendar with live bands and many interesting exhibitions. Free entrance. For Gala Information please contact 07907 908623 (2011).
