The Stove Grate Industry

stoveIn the 1860s the Stove Grate Industry was said to be one of the staple industries of the town. 'Stove Grates' I hear you say, 'what are they?' One of the industries of yesteryear and yes they made grates for stoves. Anyhow I could not find any of the old firms like in the phone book so it looks like they have gone the way of all metal. Although some firms are designated 'Stove Grate' in actuality many of them produced a variety of iron and steel goods. Manufacturers mentioned in various books which produced a variety of cast iron goods are George Wright & Co., Micklethwaite & Skelton and Corbitt & Co.

I have been perusing old maps of Rotherham from the 1901 Ordnance Survey and the map for the Masbrough area shows the following stove grate works:-

Burton Weir Works (Stove Grate) on a site at Millmoor, Masbrough.
Clough Works (Stove Grate) off Union Street, Masbrough.
Ferham Works (Stove Grate) off Foundry Street, Masbrough.
