Rotherham Main
Rotherham Main was situated at the foot of Canklow Woods in the river valley near an ancient ford across the River Rother. Work on the colliery was begun in 1890 when the first shaft was sunk and the first coal was raised in 1894. The owners were John Brown and Co. Ltd. who built pit houses and a school in Canklow for the colliers and their families. An accident occurred in 1891 when 8 miners fell 60 feet (18 m) from their wooden platform. The colliery had problems, the area was prone to flooding but prior to World War I it employed around 2,000 miners. Following the General Strike in 1926 the colliery was virtually closed and needed just 300 employees to maintain it.
The colliery closed down in 1954. I can find no sign that this colliery ever existed so I presume it has all disappeared under later road development.
Apparently it covered the site now occupied by London and Scandinavian Metals and the derelict land alongside. Airshaft heads are all that remain.
