The Rotherham Hippodrome
The
Rotherham Hippodrome was situated on Henry Street and opened with a programme of varieties in
August 1908. With seating for 2500 people it was the largest theatre in Rotherham. In 1911 a
Salvation Army Rally was held there and William Booth the founder of the movement was the chief
speaker. Many of the top stars of Music Hall appeared there including George Formby and Gracie
Fields.
The Hippodrome ceases to function as a theatre in 1932 and became a cinema. The Hippodrome finally closed in December 1959. I don't remember the building at all but I do recall my mother pointing out a car park and reminiscing about the shows she had seen there. This could have been the Hippodrome or it could have been the Theatre Royal or both. I think that the site is somewhere under the market or the market hall.
