Rotherham At Risk
In July 2010, the Rotherham Advertiser has reported that the English Heritage Buildings At Risk Register, a compilation of heritage and historical buildings, conservation areas and monuments in the UK that are in danger, has sixteen listed in the Borough of Rotherham. These include:-
Keppel's Column at Scholes
There are problems with significant structural cracks, eroded stone work and a dangerous central stairwell. It has been closed to the public for many years. A deal of money has been spent strapping the old gentleman and adding perspex covers to the windows to prevent further deterioration. Plans to restore the column have been turned down as the cost is not justified relevant to the projected visitor numbers. Since renovation costs run into several million it is a fair bet that RMBC will not have the money to do the job any time soon.
The Three Cranes on High Street, Rotherham
The remains of a Medieval inn behind later shop fronts. For 20, 30, 40 or more years RMBC, Rotherham Civic Society, amongst others have been trying to put plans and finances into place to save the very last piece of Rotherham's Medieval Heritage. At present the Grade II listed building is subject to a proposal to be placed under council ownership. However given the present belt-tightening there is unlikely to be any money forthcoming.
Swinton Pottery (The Rockingham Works)
A scheduled ancient monument including Pottery Ponds and the Waterloo Kiln.
Kimberworth Motte and Bailey Castle
It is a long time since I've had a mooch around this area but I had not realised that there was enough left of this to be worth preserving. The motte is in private ownership and deteriorating.

The Roman Ridge
A scheduled ancient monument, there are several section considered at risk.
Roman Ridge: section 110yds (100m) long, 450yds (410m) NNE of Kimberworth Park Farm, Rotherham, Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
Roman Ridge: south east of Hill Top (section 700yds (660m) long, Meadowhall Road to Hill Top), Rotherham, Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
Roman Ridge: section 400yds (370m) long from Hill Top Lane to Little Common Lane, Rotherham, Rotherham, South Yorkshire
Roman Ridge: section 400yds (370m) long in Wath Wood, Rotherham, Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
