Local History Groups & Events
The Victorians had a fine sense of their own self-importance
when it came to local history. If you could use it keep it - if you couldn't use it destroy it and start again. In Rotherham this principle was applied very closely to buildings but a
little less stringently to records. So here in town we have very few old buildings but hills of old paper. In the Twenty-first Century there are a number of local history societies and
groups endeavouring to retain and restore as much as possible of their local history.
Heritage Open Days
Heritage Open Days are organised by The Civic Trust and English Heritage all over the country. On these days you can freely explore old, interesting or important buildings in your area, some of which are not normally open to the public. These are open some time each September - list and details available about August each year for the coming September.
Visit the website at www.heritageopendays.org for information on buildings open to view in other areas.
