Music Memories

Although the music scene in Rotherham is still pretty good, you must cast your mind back to the Fifties and Sixties, even up to the Seventies when some really top acts used to appear in the town. I do remember one pop concert in Clifton Park; I think it must have been 1972 because I was working away from Rotherham then and came home for the event. Groups appearing included Marmalade, most famous for their 1969 hit 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da' and the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, who I think got booed off they were so awful.

Rawmarsh Baths

In its heyday Rawmarsh Baths (long demolished) used to attract some really top-class acts. I don't remember these myself but several older Rawmarshians have waxed lyrical about the fame of some of the people who performed there: Tom Jones and Lulu have both been mentioned. I'll try and get more information.

The Assembly Rooms

The Assembly Rooms were used for a variety of purposes but I remember going to folk concerts there to see people as famous as John Williams.

The Twist Club

This was founded in 1957 by Stuart Hope and Brian Turner. It started in a small room above the Bridge Inn, moved to the Assembly Rooms and finally to the new baths on Sheffield Road. In its heyday it attracted acts such as Dave Barry and the Cruisers, and Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas. Its popularity faded with the rise of the disco era and it closed down.
