Banks & Building Societies

Before the 19th Century banks were something for the rich and landed or for wealthy merchants and tradesman. In the course of the century this began to alter as Victorian values encouraged everybody to be provident. People were paid their wages, cash in hand, either as day wages for the casual labourer or at the end of the week for the regularly employed. Everyday chequing accounts were rare, credit and debits cards unknown, but many folks had small savings of a few pennies or shillings put away for a rainy day. By 1899 there were several banks and building societies established in the town of Rotherham.
