The Lyric, Dinnington

The town of Dinnington near Rotherham has a small local theatre, The Lyric, which was opened in 1910 as a roller skating ring. Later it was a Salvation Army Citadel and during World War II was used for dances.

The building became run down in the late 1950's and around 1962 Dinnington Parish Council purchased the Lyric for £1800 and modernised the whole building. Around this time Dinnington Theatre Club was begun and the Club has staged dramatic and musical productions at the Lyric. It can be hired for wedding receptions, birthdays, dinner dances, business meetings or other events. Since January 2000 Dinnington Parish Council have staged their own Social Evenings, such as '60's' and 'Motown' theme nights.

The Lyric Theatre Junior Players were formed in 2002 and are highly successful. The players from the villages surrounding Dinnington are aged 5 – 16 in junior and senior groups and each session costs £1.50 (2007). They meet Monday evenings at the Theatre juniors 6.30 – 7.30pm and seniors 7.30 – 9pm. The group is so successful that there is a waiting list to join and the players are looking for sponsors so they can extend their activities.

Address:- Laughton Road, Dinnington, Sheffield, S25 2PQ.
