Rotherham Civic Theatre
Rotherham Civic Theatre is situated in the converted Doncaster Gate Congregational Chapel which was built in 1867. A total of £30000 was spent converting the chapel into a theatre which opened on 7 March 1960 so it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010. It's taken a fair bit of brass over the years to keep it going. I seem to remember that the roof fell in some storm. The last big problem was when a hole suddenly appeared in the stage whilst a group of youngsters were dancing on it. I think some of them fell in but hopefully all were OK.
The theatre has an intimate medium-scale auditorium with a proscenium arch performance space. Rotherham Civic Theatre plays host to many companies throughout the year with a programme which appeals to everyone. A wide programme of professional and amateur dance, drama, musicals, children's theatre, comedy, music, pantomime and variety is presented from September until July every year. The quality and popularity of the annual pantomime is such that now runs for about five weeks with as many as three performances some days.
