Culture in Rotherham

Rotherham is not a town great on culture. The dictionary defines culture as, amongst other things, refinement. In Rotherham, refinement is an industrial process. I don't mean this as an insult, after all I'm a Rotherhamite myself. A long day's work, an allotment to tend and a few pints down the pub were the boundaries of many working lives. The money, the time, and the opportunity, and yes, the will, to acquire the trappings of culture were always been limited except for the idle classes. The Victorians had a go with their Mechanics Institutes used for education and lectures, public libraries and working men's clubs which were encouraged to provide healthy sporting activity and later on a good cheap night out with a comedian and a singer. Edwardian Rotherham acquired street lighting and public transport and the variety theatres became very popular. All the big stars of their day came to town. The music halls were succeeded by the cinema, and the cinema by bingo.

I am sure that Rotherham must have had its share of poetry clubs and art appreciation societies, but I think it can be fairly said that the average citizen preferred their culture to be hearty rather than arty.

After many, many years in the doldrums of culture Rotherham now has a very healthy interest in things cultural. Large grants from various sources have helped the town along its way.
